Capoeira is a renowned Afro-Brazilian sport that blends dance, martial arts, and music into a dynamic and rhythmic practice. Its roots trace back to 16th-century Brazil, where enslaved Africans, primarily from Angola, adapted their traditional martial arts, often referred to as "ngolo" or "engolo," to create this unique form of expression. Capoeira and Ngolo share many common moves, rhythms, and sounds, reflecting their shared heritage. Capoeira is distinguished by powerful kicks seamlessly integrated into fluid, dance-like movements. It is believed to have developed as a creative response to the Portuguese slave masters’ prohibition of African customs, especially martial arts.
